James Finch hopes to keep his Phoenix Racing team running

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Phoenix Racing team owner James Finch got quite a shock on Thursday when the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida informed him that it would no longer sponsor his NASCAR teams.

Miccosukee had sponsored Phoenix’s No. 1 Nationwide Series team, which was about to begin the 2010 season with James Buescher as its driver. Now, things certainly have changed.

"It makes a hell of a difference because I’ve got to pay the bills," Finch said in the ARCA garage after Saturday night’s race at Daytona International Speedway.

Finch said he plans to keep the No. 1 Chevrolet running for the full season, but that depends on sponsorship.

"We plan to – and hopefully get a sponsor and do whatever," Finch said. "But right now we’re going forward. They had an election down there, and it changed. I got notified (Thursday) while I’m down here in Speedweeks. That’s a real big disappointment, but we’ve got to go forward."

Finch wouldn’t commit to running his team the entire year without a sponsor, but he clearly hopes he can keep it going.

"I’ve been doing this all my life," Finch said. "I’m going to reevaluate today, tomorrow and the next day. I’m going to make it work as long as I can. Right now, I’ve got a group of guys employed, I’ve got race cars, and I’ve got a schedule to go. We’re going to need some help before the year ends."
