AVONDALE, Ariz. - The saga of NASCAR Nationwide Series driver John Wes Townley took another turn Friday at Phoenix International Raceway, where Richard Childress Racing officials decided to replace him with Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer in the team's No. 21 Chevrolet.
A team spokesperson confirmed that Bowyer will replace Townley for Friday night's race in Phoenix.
Townley struggled through a difficult rookie season last year, crashing as many as 23 cars for RAB Racing. With sponsorship from Zaxby's - Townley's father is an executive in the company - Townley moved to the powerhouse RCR organization for 2010.
But the results haven't been much better. Townley crashed out of the Bristol race after wrecking the primary car in practice. And last weekend at Nashville, Townley spun early in the race before finishing 18th. His best finish of the season has been a 15th at Las Vegas.
