Braun Racing’s Reed Sorenson heads to this weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway fresh off a second-place finish.
The former Sprint Cup driver is racing a part-time Nationwide schedule for Braun this year, and his runner-up finish at Nashville Superspeedway could be a sign of things to come this year.
"When we ran this car last year, we had a second and a third the two times I ran this 32 ca," Sorenson said. "Now I have another second. Every time I get in this car, we’re fast. These guys do a good job and we’re going back to Phoenix next week and I’m in the car again – I look forward to that.
"Going into this season, I feel like I definitely want to win some races or at least have a shot at it. (Nashville) proved that we could do it, so we just have to keep working hard so we can get a little bit better so we can win."
Sorenson has raced only twice this year, but he was second at Nashville and seventh at Bristol.
Now he heads to Phoenix, where he’s posted two top-five and four top-10 finishes in five Nationwide starts at the 1-mile track.
"Phoenix is a lot of fun to race at," Sorenson said. "It's fast and flat and not at all a self-cleaning track, so there is usually a lot of excitement when an accident does happen. It definitely keeps a driver on his toes. I think the key to running well here begins with starting as close to the front as possible, preferably from the pole.
"The Dollar General team and I ran really good here last fall. Coming off our great run at Nashville, I think we have a lot of momentum and definitely a shot at the win this weekend."
