Press release: $165 million! LVMS NASCAR weekend shows increase in economic impact

Las Vegas Motor Speedway

LAS VEGAS – The 2010 NASCAR Weekend once again proved to be a huge economic windfall for the Las Vegas economy.

This year’s event, Feb. 26-28, contributed $165,767,400 to the local economy, according to figures released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. That represents a 7.4-percent increase in economic impact over the 2009 event.

"We’re well aware of the effect the poor economy is having on Las Vegas, but it’s satisfying to know that NASCAR Weekend continues to provide a significant boost to the local economy," said LVMS President Chris Powell. "Jimmie Johnson may have won the big race, but the big winners this year were the local merchants. This is the biggest sporting event each year in Nevada, and we’re proud of the role the speedway plays within the community."

According to the LVCVA survey, the 2010 event attracted an estimated 148,000 unique visitors to Las Vegas. These race fans occupied 127,000 room nights. The 2010 event also saw more out-of-town guests visit Las Vegas for the NASCAR event than each of the past four years.

"The annual NASCAR weekend continues to be a great event for Las Vegas," said Rossi Ralenkotter, president/CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. "We have a strong partnership with NASCAR, and the two brands combined make the annual Las Vegas race one of the most popular on the circuit."

Said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, "The annual NASCAR Weekend is one of Las Vegas’ signature events and the news that there was a bigger economic impact this year than last is another good sign that Las Vegas is on its way back. Las Vegas is known for its world-class entertainment, hotels, shopping and restaurants and we also have a world-class speedway that continues to deliver thrilling races and a boost to the local economy."

The race weekend included the Shelby American NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Sam’s Town 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race, zMAX Pole Day and two nights of dirt-track racing for USAC and the World of Outlaws.
