ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Will Carl Edwards have the last laugh?
The Roush Fenway Racing driver made plenty of jokes at his expense at Road America during the first day of NASCAR Nationwide Series practice. But who was fastest at the end of the day?
Here’s a sample of his comments in between the two sessions Thursday:
"I’ve never been as self-conscious, watching the (corner workers) with the flags stand out there," Edwards said. "They watch us go through corners, and I know they’re going, ‘What an idiot.’ I’ll go in way too deep, pitch the thing sideways and hit the curb. They’re thinking, ‘Man, these NASCAR guys.’"
And: "At first, I didn’t think the (gear) ratio was going to work for me," Edwards said. "But I was just going so slow that I wasn’t running enough rpms."
Finally: "A friend of mine raced here in the ‘80s in motorcycles. He’s raced a lot of race tracks that we go to, and he just kept telling me about this Kink. He called it a ‘suicide corner.’ I thought, ‘I’ve never heard him complain about anything.’ I got down to the corner and thought, ‘Whoa, that’s what he’s talking about.’"
